Lawmaker Plans To Propose Better Protection For Research Volunteers

People who volunteer for medical research studies would get better legal protection under legislation proposed by one state delegate.

Delegate James Hubbard, a Democrat from Prince George's County, Maryland, was scheduled to introduce a bill on February 4, 2002, that would strengthen protections for volunteers. The legislation also would open institutions' records to public scrutiny.

Hubbard said he was disturbed by the approval process for a highly criticized Kennedy Krieger Institute lead paint study. Lawsuits have been filed on behalf of two children who allegedly suffered irreversible brain damage during the study.
