Atherosclerotic lesions have human cytomegalovirus infection in the vessel walls; may be a site of latency.

According to recent research published in the journal Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, "Recently, increasing attention is being paid to the viral etiology of atherosclerosis (AS).
