New metabolic syndrome research to begin in South Dakota

A study into the health risks of metabolic syndrome is about to begin in South Dakota and could involve more than 140 women from the Yankton, Vermillion and northeast Nebraska.

Known as the Yankton Clinical Research Alliance, the 2-year project includes Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton Medical Clinic and the University of South Dakota School of Medicine.

Metabolic syndrome affects 1 in every 4 Americans, and can lead to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and even death, said study director Dr. Michael Hein of Yankton Medical Clinic and the USD medical school.
