Bird flu infections in humans prompt new vaccine studies

Three flu pandemics have occurred during the last 100 years, including one in 1918 in which nearly 40 million people died. Researchers at the U.S. National Institutes of Health are testing avian influenza "bird flu" vaccines to prevent the rapid spread of infection that could lead to another pandemic. "Recently, some strains of bird flu viruses have infected people in Asia," said Robert Belshe, MD, director of the Center for Vaccine Development at Saint Louis University School of Medicine.
