Company receives notice that European patent will be issued for optical biopsy system

SpectraScience, Inc. (SCIE) announced that it has received notification from the European Patent Office that a patent will be issued for its "Optical Biopsy Forceps and Method of Diagnosing Tissue."

The company has developed its proprietary WavStat optical biopsy system for use by physicians in diagnosing tissue to be normal, precancerous, or cancerous.

The WavStat system is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in detecting cancer in the colon. Other applications for detecting precancers in the throat, sometimes called Barrett's esophagus, are being tested in a clinical trial.
