Infants or adults? U.S. NIH ethicists argue for new avian influenza priorities

A new study on scenarios for an American flu pandemic suggest that the country would be better off by vaccinating healthy young people than the oldest, youngest and sickest.

In a paper appearing in a recent issue of the journal, Science, University of Vermont ethicist Alan Wertheimer, professor emeritus of political science and current visiting scholar at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and Ezekiel Emanuel, head of the U.S. NIH's clinical bioethics department, state their argument, an alternative to traditional views.
