Rising Liabilities Drive Funding Status of U.S. Pensions Lower in June, According to BNY Mellon Asset Management

Falling yields on long Aa corporate bonds drove liabilities higher, causing the funded status of a typical U.S. corporate pension plan to decline by 5.7 percentage points in June, according to monthly statistics published by BNY Mellon Asset Management.

Assets for a typical moderate risk portfolio increased 0.3 percent, while liabilities rose 7.6 percent during the month. For the year through June 30, the funding ratio for the typical plan is now up 5.2 percentage points, as represented by the BNY Mellon Pension Liability Index.
