Ethics Violations

Income from outside sources to scientists must now be disclosed

Scores of top scientists at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) will be required to disclose income from drug companies and outside employers after a newspaper investigation found possible ethics violations.

The announcement March 1, 2004, by the U.S. Office of Government Ethics comes after The Los Angeles Times reported in December that in some instances the scientists operated as consultants for companies whose drugs were linked to the deaths of patients taking part in NIH studies.
