Novel HEV strain identified in Namibia outbreak

A novel strain of HEV has been identified from a Namibia outbreak in the mid-1990's.

According to recent research from South Africa, "Endemic circulation of hepatitis E virus (HEV) in Namibia was suspected from serological data during an outbreak of non-A, non-B hepatitis in Rundu in 1995."

"The source of the outbreak was suspected to be the water supply, which had been compromised approximately 6 months earlier," noted H.T. Maila and coauthors at the University of Witwatersrand.
