Florida doctor convicted of Medicare fraud

A Martin County doctor was convicted March 5, 2004, of fraudulently billing the federal government for more than $320,000 in insurance payments.

Paul Elliott, MD, 38, of Stuart, was found guilty of 22 counts of health care fraud and one count of obstruction of justice. He was acquitted of two counts of fraud and one count of money laundering. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Prosecutors said the doctor charged the state 240 times for comprehensive MRIs after giving patients a basic version of the test. The state was charged about $300,000 in false claims.
