With increased use, complications of ureteroscopy are possible

Careful attention to ureteroscopic instruments is needed to avoid patient injury and subsequent complications, researchers say.

According to a study from the United States, "Advances in ureteroscope design, instrumentation, and technique have expanded the indications for ureteroscopic management of upper tract pathology.

"With increased use, however, comes the potential for greater injury. Although technical improvements have reduced the likelihood of complications, adverse events during ureteroscopy still occur," wrote D.B. Johnson and colleagues, University Utah, Health Science Center.
