BlueCross could get bigger role with demise of TennCare

If TennCare is ended in favor of a basic Medicaid program, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee could end up with an expanded role as its exclusive administrator.

The state's largest insurer, with handles claims for about 700,000 of TennCare's 1.3 million members, would be a likely bidder to administer all of a revised Medicaid program next year, Governor Phil Bredesen said.

The governor told the Chattanooga Times Free Press that if he proceeds with plans to replace TennCare with a Medicaid program, he also could replace the seven different TennCare health plans with a single plan.
