New center to study medical ethics in the care of children

Children's Hospital in Seattle, Washington, is establishing a new center to examine ethics issues that arise in the care of children.

The Center for Pediatric Bioethics, the first of its kind, will receive $340,000 a year in federal funds plus $1 million in startup money from Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center, which is affiliated with the University of Washington.

"If you look around the country there are lots of centers for bioethics, but all of them tend to be devoted more toward general issues," said Doug Diekema, MD, director of medical ethics at Children's and interim head of the new center. "There really is no concentrated center...
