Alzheimer amyloid beta precursor studied, alpha-secretase cleavage shown

Published in Law and Health Weekly, April 30th, 2005

A study from Japan has reported on the novel endoplasmic reticulum-localized alpha-secretase cleavage of Alzheimer amyloid beta precursor protein (APP).

"In the processing of APP, alpha- and P-secretase pathways compete with each other for cleaving APP. Therefore, physiologically these two secretases are likely to colocalize in the same subcellular compartments.

"Previously beta-secretase cleavage of APP was found in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). We herein tested whether alpha-secretase cleavage is also detected in the ER," wrote R.W. Shin and colleagues, Tohoku University.

"We used experimental system of COS7 cells transfected...
