Instant, computerized notification system communicates end-of-life wishes

Physicians at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) have developed a new system to alert clinicians of an OHSU patient's end-of-life wishes upon arrival at OHSU Hospital.

The system is part of OHSU's secure electronic medical records database and provides clinicians with near-immediate information when a patient's doctor has filled out a Physician's Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) form or the patient has an advanced directive.
