Altarum Institute wins grant to study loss of healthcare coverage for early retirees

The nonprofit Altarum Institute has been awarded a grant from the New York-based Commonwealth Fund to study the growing risk among young retirees that they will lose their healthcare coverage.

Trends show that, as large employers in industries such as the manufacturing, retail or airline industry face mounting competitive pressures, there is a growing tendency to curtail or entirely eliminate health benefits for the early retiree population.

Early retirees are those individuals who retire before age 65, or have a second career, and are dependent upon healthcare insurance that is provided by their former employer.
