Apoptosis is induced in hepatoma cells by hepatitis B virus X protein

According to recent research from the People's Republic of China, hepatitis B virus X protein (HBx) induces apoptosis in hepatoma cells by inhibiting Bcl-xL expression.

"HBx exhibits numerous activities affecting gene transcription, intracellular signal transduction, cell proliferation and apoptosis. Recent studies showed that HBx induced apoptosis by causing loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, suggesting that HBx-mediated apoptosis is mitochondria-dependent.
