"Protein-energy undernutrition (PEU) during both the gestational and suckling periods causes a reduction in muscle fiber cross-section and a delay in fiber type differentiation. Such changes are not found when PEU occurs after the suckling period," scientists writing in the journal Muscle & Nerve report.
