Fowl manure can be used for environmental remediation

Disposal of animal manure is one of the biggest problems facing agriculture today. Now, scientists with the U.S. Agricultural Research Service may have found a way to convert some types into a material that can be used to help keep the environment clean.

Currently, animal waste is valued at between $3 and $10 per ton, and most of it is used as a fertilizer. Unfortunately, when added to soil, a buildup of nutrients - namely nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium - can occur, especially if it's applied repeatedly to the same area.
