18 New Jersey hospitals seek permission for new heart service

Nearly one in four New Jersey hospitals wants to add a program to perform nonemergency angioplasty, the clearing out of clogged heart arteries with a balloon-tipped catheter, without being required to have backup heart surgeons on site in case of complications. From Bayonne Hospital to Virtua-West Jersey in Marlton, 18 acute care hospitals across the state submitted applications for such a program by January 3, 2005,'s deadline, according to the state Department of Health and Senior Services.
