"Role of Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor (MIF) in the Pathophysiology of Lethal Mouse Malaria Infection."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to a joint meeting of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the American Society for Investigative Pathology, and the American Association of Immunologists, held June 2-6, 1996, in New Orleans, Louisiana, "Human falciparum malaria, caused by the intracellular protozoa Plasmodium falciparum, results in 1-2 million deaths per year, mostly children under the age of five. The P. falciparum intraerythrocytic stage is characterized by the production of hemozoin or malaria pigment, a polymer formed by the crosslinking of heme monomers released during digestion of host hemoglobin.
