Heme-iron increases levels of parasite adherence to vaginal epithelial cells

Continuing their work on sources of iron that regulate Trichomonas vaginalis virulence genes, University of Texas microbiologists report that heme-bound iron increases levels of the parasite's adherence to vaginal epithelial cells.

"Trichomonas vaginalis is a protozoan responsible for the number one, non-viral sexually transmitted disease," said J.F. Alderete and colleagues.

In the course of infection, "[s]urface proteins (AP65, AP51, AP33, and AP23) mediate adherence to vaginal epithelial cells (VECs). Iron increases growth of trichomonads and synthesis and surface placement of adhesins," they explained.
