Coventry Health up, company backs 2005 earnings view

Coventry Healthcare Inc. logged a nearly 32% increase in profits for the fourth-quarter as an acquisition boosted the managed-care company's membership.

Coventry, of Bethesda, Maryland, February 22, 2005, said it earned $91.8 million, or $1.01 a share, on revenue of $1.38 billion in the fourth quarter.

Analysts were expecting earnings of 96 cents a share, according to Thomson First Call.

In the previous year, it earned $69.7 million, or 76 cents a share, on revenue of $1.22 billion.

Coventry ended the year with more than 2.5 million members, 126,000 more than a year ago.
