Pennsylvania state agency not disclosing hospital infections

A Pennsylvania state agency that is responsible for informing the public about infections patients get in hospitals has not done so, even though it was charged with that mission nearly 2 decades ago.

Officials at the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council said that during November 2003 they will propose to their board how best to compile the information, which could be a resource for consumers.

Council members said that since the group was formed in 1986 it has encountered resistance from hospital administrators, who have complained about the cost of collecting the data and have argued that not all cases of hospital infections are caused...
