Exercise, healthy weight delay cancer among women with highest genetic risk

Women who carry inherited mutations in the genes BRCA1 or BRCA2 have a lifetime risk of breast cancer of more than 80%, as well as a high risk of ovarian cancer, according to the most comprehensive study to date of these women and their families.

The study, published by The New York Breast Cancer Study Group in the October 24, 2003, edition of Science and funded by The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of New York, also found that many women with these inherited mutations come from families with few, if any, reports of breast or ovarian cancer.
