Texas moves to increase CHIP mental health benefits

Only weeks after Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) benefits were reduced, Texas plans to restore some coverage for mental health and substance abuse services, Gov. Rick Perry announced October 20, 2003.

Texas legislators reduced mental health benefits available under CHIP when they balanced the state's budget in 2003. Perry signed the budget bill, and the mental health services were cut effective September 1, 2003.

Some 5,000 children a month took advantage of the benefits in 2002. CHIP is the state's low-cost health insurance program that serves children from families who make too much money to qualify for Medicaid.
