New contract for local New York City union workers includes health care coverage

New York City's Local 32BJ Bargaining Committee has announced a tentative agreement on a contract for more than 26,000 commercial building workers. The contract maintains fully paid employer health coverage, a secure pension, and provides a 5% pay increase over the 3-year life of the contract.

Under the terms of the contract, employers will provide an additional $475 million in healthcare coverage - a 64% increase from the previous contract. According to SEIU, this contract is also significant because any agreement on healthcare automatically applies to Local 32BJ's 28,000 residential building service workers.
