Express Scripts study shows substantial savings opportunities with generics, says industry group

The Generic Pharmaceutical Association (GPhA) said states, as well as other public and private healthcare purchasers, could realize significant savings by increasing their generic utilization rates.

According to an Express Scripts, Inc., study released recently, consumers "could have saved $20 billion in 2004 and even more than this in future years by using more generic drugs."

"As the House and Senate debate ways to reduce Medicaid spending, we would encourage lawmakers to look to generic medicines as a way to achieve significant savings, while providing the same quality of care as their brand counterparts," said GPhA President and CEO Kathleen...
