Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy Applauds CMS Formulary Rule Change Related to Key Drug Types

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published its 2008 Call Letter in April, which will serve as a guidance and establish changes for Part C & D benefits in the next calendar year. This year's Call Letter included several changes related to formularies, including one that the Academy has been advocating since the initial development of the Part D benefit.

This modification relates to the pharmacologic classification system used by CMS to evaluate Part D formularies, which was developed by the US Pharmacopeia (USP). When USP created the therapeutic categories and pharmacologic classes, they also developed a third level review for Formulary Key Drug Types...
