Pharmacists Fight to Protect Patient Access to Medications

Today, the California State Legislature Budget Conference Committee met to begin discussing Governor Schwarzenegger's proposed budget. The Governor has called for a $40 million savings to the state Medi-Cal program, realized, in part, from the federal implementation of Average Manufacturer Price (AMP), a new method for calculating drug cost reimbursement. The majority of these cuts will arise from lower payments to pharmacies that fill prescriptions for Medi-Cal patients. California pharmacies have already taken a substantial financial hit with the implementation of the federal Medicare Part D program which provides prescription coverage to the elderly and disabled.
