U.N.: Spread of polio in West Africa threatens global eradication drive

Declaring the alarming spread of polio in West Africa to be the biggest threat to its global eradication, the head of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has called for the adoption of an emergency plan to stop transmission of the disease inside the region within a year.

"This year, West Africans have put down their arms in Liberia and in Cote d'Ivoire, liberating millions of children from conflict," UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy told a summit meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Accra, Ghana.
