Japanese man reaches one-year milestone on WorldHeart Novacor LVAS heart pump

On March 23, a 33-year-old man in Japan became the 101st recipient to reach the more than 1 year milestone on an artificial heart pump known as the Novacor LVAS (left ventricular assist system).

The man had a diagnosis of dilated cardiomyopathy; he received the implanted device at Osaka University Hospital on March 23, 2001. Because of Japan's low incidence of organ transplantation, he may live with a device for the rest of his life.

World Heart Corp.'s Novacor LVAS is the only implantable ventricular assist device approved for commercial sale in Japan. It is estimated that more than 20,000 new cases of end-stage heart disease are diagnosed in...
