Nonsurgical heart defect repair first for SA and Milpark Hospital

In a first for South Africa, doctors recently completed a minimally invasive procedure to close a hole in the heart of a 53-year-old patient who could not have survived full, open cardiothoracic surgery.

Professor Mohammed Rafique Essop, a professor of medicine and cardiology at the University of the Witwatersrand, performed the operation with Dr. Jeffrey Harrisberg at Milpark Hospital. The hospital is owned and managed by Network Healthcare Holdings, Ltd., (Netcare), the largest private hospital and doctor network in Southern Africa.
