Seventeen chosen so far for $1 million gastric bypass experiment

Louisiana's $1 million experiment to find out whether gastric bypass surgery saves money is likely to start operations this summer.

The state Office of Group Benefits, which insures nearly 250,000 state employees, public school teachers, and dependents, plans to pay for 40 operations to see whether the surgery will eventually mean lower costs to the insurance program.

But it's taking a bit longer than expected to find 40 patients who both meet the state's requirements and return letters and phone calls.
