Colloidal gold particles can be used as a sensitive in vivo marker of acute lung injury.

"Permeability of the endothelial barrier to large molecules plays a pivotal role in the manifestation of early acute lung injury," physiologists in Germany noted.

With this in mind, K. Heckel and colleagues at the University of Munich devised "a novel and sensitive technique that brings microanatomical visualization and quantification of microvascular permeability in line." In their study, "White New Zealand rabbits were anesthetized and ventilated mechanically," and "[r]abbit serum albumin (RSA) was labeled with colloidal gold particles."
