A novel surgical technique enables DIEP-flap harvest for breast reconstruction in patients with abdominal scars.

"The lower abdomen continues to be the favorite donor site for free tissue transplantation in autologous breast reconstruction," surgeons in Austria explained. "The deep inferior epigastric artery (DIEP)-flap has revolutionized microsurgical reconstruction of the breast after mastectomy."

"However, previous abdominal operations with resulting subcostal scars limit the use of this flap due to possible severe complications such as fat necrosis or wound breakdown at the donor site," noted T. Schoeller and colleagues at Leopold Franzens...
