Transplant brokered by Web site postponed

A kidney transplant brokered by a Massachusetts-based Web site was postponed October 18, 2004, after hospital officials said they wanted to make sure the organ donation was ethical.

The announcement came on the same day Bob Hickey of Edwards had been scheduled to receive a kidney from Robert Smitty of Chattanooga, Tennessee. They were brought together by the web site MatchingDonors.com.

However, after the donation was arranged, the lead transplant surgeon, Igal Kam, MD, returned from out of town and raised questions about how the match had been arranged, said Stephanie Lewis, a spokeswoman for Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center. Officials decided...
