First patients get wireless reading of pressure inside aneurysms

Morton Perkis, 73, of Miami is one of the first patients in the nation to have the pressure measured inside a balloon-like swelling of his body's largest artery, called an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).

Perkis' AAA pressure reading was such a medical milestone that it recently was televised live from the Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute in Miami to a major meeting of the world's top cardiovascular researchers.

"It's like having an antenna in my aneurysm," Perkis said as Barry Katzen, MD, waved a large, racket-like "wand" over his abdomen. The wand picked up a wireless signal from a tiny, implanted microchip.
