Heparin-coated circuits reduce complement-induced brain injury

The use of heparin-coated bypass circuits reduces complement-induced brain injury following coronary artery surgery.

"The impact of the postoperative inflammatory response on the central nervous system after cardiac surgery is uncertain," according to surgeons in France, who evaluated "the role of complement activation on cellular brain injury in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting."
