Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 may play role in pathogenesis

Expression of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and its receptor are elevated in the knee joints of rats with adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA).

"Imbalance of inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA)," scientists in Taiwan explained. "Precise determination of these cytokines would lead to better understanding of the progression of RA."

Towards this end, S.H. Liu and colleagues at Tri-Service General Hospital in Taipei "developed an in vivo microdialysis technique to directly monitor cytokine profiles in knee joints of rats" with AIA.
