Endotracheal intubation prehospital airway management safe despite complications

Field airway management with endotracheal intubation (ETI) is safe, in spite of a number of common complications.

Definitive airway control by ETI is the "standard of care in prehospital airway management," emergency physicians in Germany explained. "However, there are specific factors that may influence and complicate ETI."

In a "prospective, descriptive study at three German Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) over a 1-yr period," M. Helm and coauthors at the Federal Armed Forces Medical Center Ulm "examined the success and complication rate for field intubation performed by trauma anesthetists."
