Umbilical Hernia

Repair with synthetic mesh not recommended based on case of scar endometriosis

Based on their experience with a patient who developed scar endometriosis, physicians in private practice recommend not using synthetic mesh in the repair of umbilical hernia.

J. Majeski, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, and colleagues reported the case of "a 44-year-old female [who] was initially evaluated for a 3-cm umbilical hernia, which developed after a laparoscopic myomectomy performed 7 years prior."

The umbilical hernia was repaired using a synthetic mesh, but the woman presented 8 months later with a 3-cm raised mass associated with the incision. She was in chronic pain, the physicians said.
