Age-related changes in white matter microstructure characterized

Age-related changes in white matter (WM) microstructure have been characterized using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI).

Cerebral WM "undergoes various degenerative changes with normal aging, including decreases in myelin density and alterations in myelin structure," neurologists in the United States explained.

In a recent study, D.H. Salat and coauthors at MIT "acquired whole-head, high-resolution diffusion tensor images" from "38 participants across the adult age span."
