Reimbursement for minimally invasive procedures often pays surgeons less, study shows

Investigators at Jefferson Medical College have found minimally invasive abdominal procedures (MIPs), also known as laparoscopic surgery, offer many patients the promise of shorter hospital stays, faster recovery time, less pain, and smaller scars.

However, when it comes to reimbursement by Medicare and other third-party payers, the research also found MIPs do not get recognized in an equivalent manner, causing surgeons to accept less compensation for their work.
