Study results from S. Kurisu and colleagues broaden understanding of cardiomyopathies

"Recent studies have demonstrated that stress-induced Tako-tsubo cardiomyopathy is likely to occur in elderly female patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate gender differences in the clinical characteristics of patients with Tako-tsubo cardiomyopathy," scientists writing in the journal Clinical Cardiology report.

"This study consisted of 102 patients with Tako-tsubo cardiomyopathy. It was characterized by akinesia/hypokinesia of the mid-to-distal portion of the left ventricular chamber, with normokinesia/hyperkinesia of the basal portion with an ejection fraction of less than 50% on transthoracic echocardiography.
