NIOSH Jurisdiction Expands

New Respirator Standards Set: Effective July 10, 1995

Published in Medical Letter on the CDC and FDA, June 12th, 1995

New standards will take effect July 10, 1995, for certifying the respirators that protect miners, healthcare workers, firefighters and painters against airborne dust and disease, the CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) said June 2, 1995.

NIOSH said the revised standards will allow a new generation of respirator filters to be used that leak less and are more comfortable to wear.

Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala said hospitals have been eagerly awaiting the new regulation to "advance the protection of doctors and nurses who treat patients" with tuberculosis and other infectious diseases.
