Kidney Dialysis Spreads HIVTo Nine Patients in Colombia

Nine kidney dialysis patients in Colombia apparently became infected with HIV because a dialysis center used contaminated needles, said CDC's Dr. Scott Fridkin, an epidemiology intelligence officer in the hospital infections program of the National Center for Infectious Diseases.

The incident illustrates the need for infection control practices to be adopted as dialysis treatment becomes more readily available throughout the world, the report said.

The Colombian cases apparently occurred in 1993 because large-bore needles used on patients were placed in a common soaking pan with an ineffective disinfectant.
