CDC Helps Brazil Type Rare Tropical Viruses

The worldwide scare caused by the Ebola virus in Zaire coupled with four deaths from a similar cause in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, has put the spotlight on the number of strange killer viruses appearing in Brazil.

The cause of illness in the Brazil's Mato Grosso city of Cuiaba was only discovered after one victim's family demanded an autopsy. The family was planning to sue the hospital which treated him for negligence. When the forensic department could not identify the cause of the advanced deterioration in the kidneys, liver and lungs of the corpse, they sent samples to the Adolfo Lutz Institute in Sao Paulo.
