Most E. coli infections occur in the summer, when people cook outdoors more often. CDC said its estimate of the number of illnesses will probably rise as more laboratories test for the E. coli O157 bacteria.
An epidemiologist in the CDC's National Center for Infectious Diseases said E. coli O157 is thought to be the leading cause of kidney failure in U.S. children.
