CDC Warns of E. coli O157

Careless Summer Barbecuing Risks E. Coli Transmission

As many as 15,000 people in the United States will suffer untreatable and potentially fatal illnesses this summer because of bacteria sometimes found in undercooked ground beef, according to a report released by CDC on June 8, 1995.

Most E. coli infections occur in the summer, when people cook outdoors more often. CDC said its estimate of the number of illnesses will probably rise as more laboratories test for the E. coli O157 bacteria.

An epidemiologist in the CDC's National Center for Infectious Diseases said E. coli O157 is thought to be the leading cause of kidney failure in U.S. children.
