CDC/EPA Issue Joint Warning

U.S. Tap Water a Danger To the Immune-Impaired

Tap water could be fatal to people with weakened immune systems, CDC said June 15, 1995. People have several choices for safe water, health officials said.

CDC and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommended that people at risk could boil tap water, choose some but not all brands of bottled water, or install some but not all point-of-use home treatment systems.

The agencies said that even tap water processed within federal treatment guidelines may contain enough of the parasitic Cryptosporidium organisms to cause severe - eventually fatal - gastrointestinal disease in people with HIV/AIDS, cancer and transplant patients on drugs that...
